The Natural Roots Stainless Steel Sprouting Tray Set is designed for growing a variety of sprouts, microgreens, and grass, providing a convenient way to enjoy them throughout the year. Below, you’ll find general instructions and tips to kickstart your sprouting journey.
General Instructions:
- Wash the entire stainless-steel set with warm soapy water.
- For trays or jars, open a seed package and place the seeds in the soaking tray or jar. Pour fresh water over them and let them soak for 8 – 12 hours.
- Spread the saturated seeds evenly in the sprouting tray or jar. Rinse them with fresh water, ensuring they are not bunched up. Place the lid on the tray or jar.
- Rinse your seeds with fresh water every 8 – 12 hours, twice a day. After rinsing, tilt the tray or jar to a 45-degree angle to fully drain excess water. Ensure seeds are spread out, preferably not on top of one another.
- Maintain a single layer or as flat as possible. This promotes your sprout’s health, and your seeds will begin to sprout in about 1 to 3 days.
- Minimize sunlight exposure for the best sprouts. Keep the tray lid on as long as possible. Jars are best covered with light-blocking material. (Even a thick sock is suitable). While sprouts do not require light to grow healthy, you can remove the lid or material at the end of the growing cycle to add some green color. Be cautious, as excessive greening can lead to a bitter flavor.
Harvesting and Storage:
- Harvesting for most sprouts is 5-7 days. The color of the roots is your best guide. If they are white, you can continue to grow as desired.
- At harvest, you can store the container in your refrigerator or transfer sprouts to a bowl in the refrigerator. If you decide to harvest your sprouts, DON’T rinse them. If you do, use a salad spinner to remove excess water. Putting wet sprouts in the refrigerator causes them to become “mushy.”
Sprouting Tips for Optimal Yield and Health:
- Water: Use tap water; avoid excess water in the sprout container after the initial soaking period.
- Light: Sprouts grow best with little to no light. Towards the end of the growing cycle, some light may be desirable to promote a green color.
- Seed Spreading: Flatten out the seeds after the soaking phase to prevent them from “bunching up.”
- Root Color & Smell: Healthy roots are white. Harvest when roots start turning darker. Check for a fresh smell; foul odors or prematurely brown roots indicate issues.
- Excess Seeds: Avoid using too many seeds; prevent “bunching up” to retain excess water.
- Additives & Soil: Do not add anything to the sprouter; mature sprouts can be planted in soil after the sprouting period.
- Seeds and Sprouter: Ensure your sprouter has a fine screen to retain all seeds.
