HINTS TO SUCCESSFUL SPROUTING

INSTRUCTIONS FOR JAR WITH LIDS SPROUTING

Stainless Steel Sprouting Jar with Screen Lids:

You can easily grow and enjoy sprouts anytime of the year. Below are general instructions and a few tips to get you started.

Instructions

You will need the following items:

  • Sprouting lids
  • A largemouth Mason jar (32oz / one liter)
  • Sprouting seeds of your choice
  • A bowl
  1. Place 1 to 2 tablespoon(s) of seeds in the Mason jar.  Poor water over them so that the water is two inches above them.  Stir the seeds.  Ensure they are not sticking together or floating.  Keep the seeds in the water overnight or 8 to 12 hours and keep them out of direct sunlight.
  • Next, drain the water.
  • Rinse the seeds with fresh water and drain the water a couple of times.  Place the jar, upside down, in a 45-degree angle in the bowl to allow the residual water to drain out.
  • Repeat step 3 every 8 to 12 hours daily (about three to eight days) until your sprouts are ready to harvest.

Sprouts do not require light and taste better with less light. If you desire the green color place them on your windowsill where the light will turn them greener.   Greener sprouts may taste a little bitter. Covering your jar with a thick old sock or other dense fabric is not necessary but a good way to optimize your sprout health by limiting the amount of light/sum exposure and produce the best sprouts.

Store sprouts in a container lined with paper towels to absorb excess water.  This will help keep them fresh longer in the refrigerator.

You are guaranteed the freshest sprouts and will save money when you grow them at home. Sprouts are healthy, delicious and fun to grow!

INSTRUCTION FOR SPROUTING TRAYS

Stainless Steel Sprouting Tray:

Natural Roots Stainless Steel Sprouting Tray can grow all kinds of sprouts and microgreens. This model is for the beginner to use with a plate on top and bottom. Experienced sprouters use this to “stack” multi-level trays and grow different sprout crops at the same time! You can easily grow and enjoy them anytime of the year. Below are general instructions and a few tips to help you get started growing sprouts.

General instructions:

  1. Wash the stainless-steel tray with warm soapy water.
  2. Place seeds (seeds 2 – 3 tbsp., beans 1/4 – 1 cup) in the bowl. Pour fresh water over them and let them soak in the water for about 8 – 12 hours.
  3. Pour the saturated seeds in the sprouting tray. Spread them evenly and rinse them with fresh water. If you have a water sprayer in your sink, it will help spread the seeds and water them evenly. You will use two of your own plates – one as a base and one as a cover. Place the sprouting tray between both plates.
  4. Rinse your seeds with fresh water every 8 – 12 hours two to three times a day. Tilting the tray to the side the sink will help remove excess water. Your seeds will begin to sprout in about 1 to 3 days. You can allow them to grow to the length you desire.
  5. Keep your top plate on as long as possible.  Sprouts do not require light to grow healthy. You can remove the plate at the end of the growing cycle to add some green color. However, the “greening” process can cause your sprouts to develop a bitter flavor.
  6. At this point, your home-grown sprouts are ready to be harvested and enjoyed! Gently pull the sprouts out with your fingers.

The roots are edible. Some sprouts, such as Brassicas may look like fungus has grown on the roots, but don’t be alarmed, this is actually a part of the root and not fungus.  You can store your sprouts in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh longer in the refrigerator if you don’t water them about 8 hours before harvesting (you don’t want them to be too moist before refrigerating.

You are guaranteed the freshest sprouts and will save money when you grow them at home. They are healthy, delicious and fun to grow! IMPORTANT SPROUTING TIPS

SPROUTING TIPS:

TO Have the Best Yield and Healthiest Sprouts Growing in Your Home

WATER: You only need to use tap water. Other than the initial soaking period your objective is to wet all the sprouts but NOT have any excuses water in the sprout container. Excess water causes the formation of things you don’t want to grow with your healthy sprouts

LIGHT: Sprouts grow best with little to no light. That’s why our sprouters have a lid. Jars are best covered with something to block out the light getting through the glass. Towards the end of the growing cycle (5-7 days) some light may be desirable to promote a green color. Too much greening causes a sour taste in the sprouts. It’s a personal choice between taste and color

SPREADING OUT SEED: After the soaking phase (first day) it is beneficial to flatten out the seeds to ensure they don’t “bunch up”. The flatter the better

ROOT COLOR & SMELL:  Each time you rinse look closely at root color and smell the sprouts. Healthy roots are white. Once they start turning darker it is time to harvest. Also smell your sprouts. They should smell fresh. If there is a foul smell or if the roots are turning prematurely brown it means: lack of watering, too much water,  too many seeds, too much heat or too much sun.

WHEN TO HARVEST & STORAGE: Harvesting of most sprouts is 5-7 days. The root color is you best guide. If they are white you can continue to grow as desired.  At harvest you can (1) stick the container in your refrigerator and eat as you desire or remove from the tray and put in a bowl in the refrigerator. If you decide to harvest your sprouts DON’T rinse them. If you do use a salad spinner to get the water out. Putting wet sprouts in the refrigerator cause them to be  “mushy”

EXCESS SEEDS: Using too many seeds is a mistake.  After soaking your seeds should NOT be so think that they are on top of one another. “Bunching of seeds causes them to retain excess water. Excess water causes the growth of undesirable elements in you sprouts.

ADDITIVES & SOIL: DO NOT add anything to sprouter. All the nutrients required are provided by Mother Nature in the seeds for the full growth of the sprout. Soli has all kinds of contaminants that are not beneficial in the sprouting period.  Mature sprouts can be planted in soil AFTER the sprouting period.

SEEDS AND SPROUTER: If your seeds are falling through your screen, your sprouter is inappropriate. Ours are designed with a fine screen that allows water to exit and retain all the seeds.

ROOTS: Sprout roots are very edible but are sourer than the main sprout body. You can cut them off. Make a smoothy if desired! To remove sprouts from a sprouting tray use scissors or a sharp knife or  if you want the whole sprout, just pull the entire sprout through the screen a little bit at a time. All our sprouters are dishwasher compatible. If you are going to wash by hand soak the sprouter/lids in hot water for 5-6 minutes so they clean up easy.

SPROUT WRAPS (a favorite)  – A calorie-wise fresh lunch

Egg whites are so much healthier than the whole egg. The problem is that omlettes with egg whites as the base ten to fall apart and look like a pile of white chunks and the taste?

A sprout omelette is healthy and the sprouts hold the omlette together so it slides out of the pan in one piece.  Besides the choice of sprouts the combinations are endless and are “superfood”!

Here’s my personal basic recipe for a 10 minute sprout omlette.

  1. Turn the broiler on in your oven or toaster oven.
  2. Add to a bowl
  3.  A cup of sprouts.
  4. An ounce of your favorite cheese gated or chopped small
  5. 3-4 ounces of chopped onion and or mushrooms
  6. 2 ounces of any milk
  7. Salt, pepper and spices to taste
  8.   Cut your sprouts and stir the mix with scissors

I flour don’t the length of the sprouts will cause difficulty in eating it.

  • Spray your fry pan with Pam or any other vegetable spray. Pour the mix in the pan. Spread the sprouts out evenly with the other garnishes in the middle.
  • Turn on the heat to medium. As the white forms use a spatula to bring the white to the omlette rather than letting it spread. In about three minutes the white will be done.
  • Stick the pan in your broiler for 5 minutes to brown and melt the cheese.
  • Serve, garnish and enjoy!  If you are in a rush you can transfer the firm  omelette from the pan to a pan to a plate and finish in the microwave for 1-2 minutes
